“Never write him off”-Twitter reacts as Virat Kohli slams 72nd century, surpasses Ricky Ponting’s record
Virat Kohli slams 72nd century, surpasses Ricky Ponting's record
Virat Kohli ended his three years long draught by finally smashing a ton in ODIs. He took time to set before racing to his 72nd ton in international cricket, surpassing Ricky Ponting’s 71 ton.
Kohli is just behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 100 international centuries. Following this knock, the Delhi-based batter also completed 1000 ODI runs in Bangladesh and became the second player after Shane Watson to score those runs in Bangladesh.
The 34-year-old also has 1000-plus runs against three different nations outside home (Australia, England, and now Bangladesh). Despite Kohli’s ton, the limelight was stolen by the youngster Ishan Kishan. Kohli put on a 290-run stand for the second wicket with Kishan.
The 24-year-old scripted history by smashing the fastest double ton by surpassing the great Chris Gayle. He raced to his double century off just 126 balls, becoming the fourth Indian to reach the mark (other Indians were Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virender Sehwag).
The Ranchi-based notched up 210 runs and stands with Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman in the fifth spot on the table of highest-run scorers in ODI cricket. The list is topped by India skipper Rohit Sharma who scored 264 runs.
Meanwhile, Kohli notched up his 44th ODI ton before getting dismissed on 113 (off 91 balls). His knock included 11 fours and two sixes as he played at a strike rate of 124.18. As India were losing wickets after Kishan’s dismissal, Shakib Al Hasan also got rid of Kohli when his ball made the Indian talisman skip down the track for a big hit over wide long-off. But he ended up hitting with the bottom part of the bat and the ball fell into the hands of Mehidy Hasan.
Talking about the match, apart from these two batters- Kishan and Kohli- others didn’t play high-scoring knocks. Washington Sundar played 27 balls to score a quick 37, while Axar Patel scored 20 runs off 17 balls. Despite the falling of wickets at regular intervals after the set batters’ dismissals, India reached a massive total of 409/8 in their allotted 50 overs.
