Wanindu Hasaranga and other Sri Lankan bowlers restricted Pakistan’s innings to just 121 on Friday, September 9 at the Dubai International Stadium.
Sri Lanka had won the toss and opted to field first. Openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan entered the crease but soon Rizwan lost his wicket. Pramod Madushan was the debutant. He bowled a short one in line with the stumps and Rizwan had gone for the pull but was in no position to do so. He only managed a top edge that flied high to the left of the keeper. Kusal Mendis made no mistake and grabbed a comfortable catch. Rizwan departed after scoring 14 runs off 14 balls.
Babar Azam had not a good season in this Asia Cup 2022, but this time, he was the top scorer. He played 29 balls to score 30 runs including two fours. But in the 11th over, Hasaranga bowled a fuller and quicker ball through the air on the middle. Azam danced down the pitch and tried to slog it over mid-wicket but missed it as it just straightens enough to beat him and shattered the stumps in the end.
Fakhar Zaman scored only 13 runs off 18 balls with a four and Chamika Karunaratne made him his victim. Iftikar Ahmed scored 13 runs off 17 balls with a six before Hasaranga bowled him out too.
Mohammad Nawaz played a knock of 26 runs off 18 balls with a four and two sixes but during the 19th over by Dishan Madushanka, he bowled on good length and Nawaz heaved it towards deep mid-wicket and set off for the run. He called for the second as he wanted to keep the strike. Hasaranga in the field was very quick to pick up the bowl and fired in a throw towards the keeper who took the balls off in a flash as Nawaz put in a desperate dive in.
Maheesh Theekshana and Madushan scalped two wickets each while Hasaranga picked up three wickets. Dhananjaya de Silve and Karunarate claimed one wicket each. At the end, Pakistan’s score read 121 all out in 19.1 overs.
