“Make way for skipper!”- Jasprit Bumrah to lead India vs England after Rohit Sharma ruled out due to Covid-19
Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma
Regular Indian captain Rohit Sharma has caught the Covid-19 virus, which ruled him out of the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham starting from July 1. Friday’s match should have been played in Manchester last September but it had been postponed due to Covid-19 outbreak in Indian camp. Team India is leading the five-match series by 2-1.
The long speculations have been ended regarded the fact of who is going to lead Team India. It was a matter of time to select the captain but Rohit’s unavailbility gave India a new captain in the form of pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah becomes the 36th captain for India and will be the first pacer since Kapil Dev to captain the side. Kapil Dev’s last game as India captain was an ODI against England in Mumbai in November 1987.
“Rohit Sharma, captain, Indian Cricket Team is ruled out of the rescheduled fifth Test against England to be played from Friday. Rohit underwent a RAT Test on Thursday morning and returned a positive result for COVID-19,” read a BCCI statement.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committe has named Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the upcoming Test and Rishabh Pant as his deputy,” the statement further added.
Bumrah will also be the second captain leading India in the Pataudi Trophy after Virat Kohli captained in the first four games. But since he called it quits to captaincy, Rohit Sharma was to lead it before his being tested positive for Covid-19.
“It is a very big honour. It is a very big achievement,” Bumrah said. “We did a test today morning as well. Rohit tested positive. Then I was officially informed that I was going to lead the side.”
Jasprit Bumrah also said, “MS Dhoni told me that he captained India straight away and never captained anywhere. He’s one of the most successful captains. I’m focusing on how to help the team”.
Bumrah had picked 18 wickets in seven bowling innings at an average of 20.83. Bumrah was made the vice-captain in the Test series against Sri Lanka and had said he wouldn’t shy away from if he is given captaincy but it actually came sooner, rather in an unfortunate situation.
