India skipper and opener Rohit Sharma showed signs of a comeback in 2023, but still, he is struggling to convert a good start into a big score. As India are locking horns with New Zealand in the first ODI, Rohit, who whacked the ball toward the boundary several times in the powerplay, couldn’t complete his half-century at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday (January 18).
Rohit won the toss and decided to bat first. He and Shubman Gill walked out to bat and stitched a 60-run stand. But in the 13th over, Blair Tickner gave the Kiwis their first breakthrough when he delivered a full ball on the middle, which Rohit attempted to play but lost control of it. It traveled high, before Daryl Mitchell at mid-on grabbed the skier. Rohit departed after a 34-ball 38 runs, which also included four boundaries and two sixes.
Rohit’s failure triggered fans on Twitter as they slammed the Indian skipper’s constant failure. Check their reactions below:
India vs New Zealand match so far

After Rohit’s departure, Virat Kohli entered the crease, but his stay was short-lived when his stumps got shattered by Mitchell Santner in the 16th over. The next batter, Ishan Kishan failed with his willow, scoring just five runs from 14 balls.
At the time of writing this article, India have reached 126 at the loss of three wickets in the 22nd over. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill are at the crease played at 15* and 65* respectively.
Gill scored a century in the previous ODI against Sri Lanka and is eyeing a big score in this match also. In his 65*-run knock, he smashed 11 fours and a six and is batting at a strike rate of 106.56. It was also the 23-year-old’s fifth half-century in ODIs.
It must be noted that Kiwi’s two pace-duo Trent Boult and Tim Southee aren’t playing in this match. This is also the first time New Zealand are playing an ODI without either Boult or Southee. Despite this, the other Kiwi bowlers didn’t disappoint the team so far.
