Though India won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1, they couldn’t repeat the same in the three-match ODI series against the same team. Australia thrashed the hosts by 21 runs to win the series 2-1 on Wednesday (March 22) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Australia posted just 269 on the scoreboard and India, despite Virat Kohli‘s half-century, plus a good start from the openers, faltered horribly in the middle overs.

Spinner Adam Zampa was the wrecker-in-chief in destroying India’s batting line-up. Whenever Australia needed wickets, Zampa delivered, scalping wickets in regular intervals.

Zampa’s first wicket was Shubman Gill who scored 37 runs from 49 balls. Later, he dismissed KL Rahul (32 off 50) to break the partnership with Kohli. And when it looked like Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja were steading the ship, Zampa’s floated delivery dismissed the former with Steve Smith taking a stunner. The Aussie spinner’s fourth victim was Jadeja, which also was the turning point of the match.

Australia needed two wickets to win the match and Marcus Stoinis, first by bamboozling Mohammed Shami, wrapped up India’s innings by running out Kuldeep Yadav.

After this win, Australia became the No.1 ODI team again and they are also the No.1 Test team right now. At the same time, India tasted defeat in the ODI series at home after four years.
