Cricket is probably the 2nd most popular sport in the United Kingdom. During the English summer, thousands flock to stadiums to watch their national team play, while their county matches also bring in many viewers. 

UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, recently met up with the English legend James Anderson. Sunak faced the pacer and a few young cricketers at a cricket facility. He met English pacer Chris Jordan as well, who reminded the PM how he got him out when they played at 10 Downing Street. He also met the wicketkeeper who took his catch.

Before facing Anderson, Sunak revealed that he had a net session in preparation to face Anderson. He finally began to bat, surviving Anderson’s bowling. Sunak then faced some young cricketers, one of whom finally dismissed him. 

Rishi Sunak announces £35 million investment into grassroot cricket 

Rishi Sunak has announced that the British government will be investing £35 million into grassroot cricket. The aim of this investment is to get over 9 lakh youths into the sport by 2030, when England and Ireland co-host the T20 World Cup.

The government will be building 16 cricket domes for young cricketers to practice indoors when the weather isn’t suitable. Along with that, they will be pumping money into various school programs to improve the facilities and infrastructure provided. 

Out of the £35 million invested, £14 million will be invested towards accessible cricket for children with special needs and disabilities. This also includes children who are from Caribbean and African heritage. 

The investment is a part of the Government’s Sport Strategy to see their youngsters become more active. They have already invested £400 million into various sports, like football, swimming, tennis, and many more.
