“Tilak Varma could be an all format player for India” – Sunil Gavaskar backs Varma to prove Rohit Sharma right
Tilak Varma
In a quite disappointing outing of Mumbai Indians this year, they got one thing right and that was Tilak Varma. Without having Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav for most of the season to steady their middle order, Tilak Varma has single handedly proved doubters wrong about his capabilities. Having caught many eyes including that of the little master, Sunil Gavaskar who has been heavily impressed by the Hyderabadi batsman.
Tilak Varma has been Mumbai Indians’ leading run scorer this year. With 368 runs, he is in the top 10 of the Orange Cap race, that too in his debut season. Tilak has performed with an average just over 40 and a commendable strike rate of 132.85. He’s also crossed the 30+ run mark in 7 innings this season. He was a stand out performer with the bat in their recent victory against Chennai Super Kings as well.

‘It’s upto him to prove Rohit Sharma right’ – Gavaskar on Tilak Varma
Speaking to star sports, the cricketer turned pundit said, “I hope that he carries on. Rohit Sharma rightly mentioned that he could be an all-format player for India. So now it’s up to him to work that little bit extra, get his fitness going, get a little tighter as far as the technique is concerned and prove Rohit right.”
He further added, “He’s got the basics right. Technically he’s right. He gets right behind the line of the ball. He’s got a straight bat, and while defending on the front foot, his bat is close to the pad. So, all his basics are right. With all the right basics you’ve got to marry the temperament and that marriage we have seen is very good at the moment.”
Tilak Varma’s performances place him as a forerunner for the IPL emerging player of the year award. More importantly, with many of the first team players expected to be rested for South Africa’s tour of India, Varma could be included in the squad and make his debut for India as well.
