MS Dhoni has always been hailed for being calm in the most intense situations and he never fails to amaze the audience with his witty moves. Venkatesh Iyer was witness to the magic of ‘captain cool’ in the IPL.’ Talking to Raj Shamani on his podcast, KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer revealed how MS Dhoni’s field placement tactics outsmarted him in a CSK-KKR clash.
While batting for the Kolkata Knight Riders in a match with MS Dhoni behind the stumps, Venkatesh Iyer was bamboozled by the CSK skipper’s field placement where he placed a very fine short third-man which Iyer thought was an unusual fielding placement.
Venkatesh Iyer lauded MS Dhoni for not keeping any disparity in his plans and behavior toward youngsters and profound batters. He said, “He (MS Dhoni) is so chill and doesn’t create a parity between youngsters and established legends like themselves.”

Venkatesh Iyer reveals what MS Dhoni told him about his unusual field placement
Venkatesh Iyer shared that he asked MS Dhoni after the match as to why had he made that fielding change for him. Iyer said “I asked him after the match, ‘Bhaiyya, kyu?’ (Why?) He said the way the ball was leaving my bat; the fielders should be a lot finer. To think so quickly then and there, and to understand the angle – cricket is all about angles – to read it is I think his biggest strength.”
Iyer was clearly in awe of the former Indian cricketer’s wit and improvisation. He said, “I was like ‘WOW! I never even thought like that. Oh, man! What a mind this guy has.” He emphasized that the Chennai Super Kings skipper is always associated with good decision making and he’s able to attend to that state of mind.
