Vice-captain Shweta Sehrawat stars in India’s opening match vs South Africa in Women’s U-19 T20 WC

India women’s U-19s team kicked start their campaign at the Women’s U19 T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket victory over South Africa on Saturday (January 14) at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. India vice-captain Shweta Sehrawat was the star for India with her brilliant unbeaten 92 runs.
South Africa skipper Karabo Meso won the toss and opted to bat first. They got off to a good start soon Sonam Yadav gave the first breakthrough when she dismissed opener Elandri Janse van Rensburg for 23 runs.
Another opener Simone Lourens was run out for 61 runs, which is also the highest individual score for her side. Her knock from 44 balls also included nine fours and a maximum.
Later, Madison Landsman’s quickfire of 32 runs from 17 balls and two cameos from Meso (19) and Miane Smit (16) took their team’s total to 166/5 in their allotted 20 overs. India’s Shafali Verma scalped two wickets, while Sonam Yadav and Parshavi Chopra picked up one wicket each.
India had a fiery start while chasing the 167-run target. Vice-captain Shweta Sehrawat and captain Shafali Verma stitched a stand and put India in a comfortable position.
Sehrawat ended up scoring an unbeaten 92 runs with the help of 20 boundaries. Shafali smashed nine fours and a six at an impressive strike rate of 281.25, scoring 45 runs from 16 balls. Later, Gongadi Trisha and Soumya Tiwari scored 15 and 10 respectively.

With the help of this victory, Indian women, who are placed in Group, are topping the table with two points. They will face UAE on Monday (January 16) at Willowmoore Park in Benoni.
