Virat Kohli is just one century away from equalling Sachin Tendulkar‘s 49 tons in ODI cricket. The 34-year-old reached the 48th ton in the World Cup match against Bangladesh on Thursday (October 19) at the MCA Stadium in Pune. However, as he and other batters were quickly chasing the 257-run target, Kohli, who reached his 90, wouldn’t have had the chance to score his ton had KL Rahul not suggested he go for the three-figure mark.

Rahul and Kohli decided not to take singles so the strike remains with the latter who was nearing his century. The way they batted, it seemed, their goal was the century. Somehow, Kohli, smashed the six when he was batting at 97*, with India needing just two runs, and hence, scored his hundred.

Now such things in international cricket are bound to attract criticism. Cricket is a team sport and such incidents makes feel the players are playing only for personal milestone. At the same time, India were in a very comfortable position, with overs and wickets in hand, so many accepted Kohli’s century, opining that there was no problem at all with his knock, that he should go for it if he helped the team to chase the target. But others, undoubtedly, called it a selfish knock. Rahul, after leading India to a seven-wicket victory, revealed what went behind the decision for the century.

He (Kohli) was confused actually. He said, ‘It will not look too nice not to take this single. It’s still a World Cup. It’s still a big stage. I don’t want to look like I am trying to get to the milestone. I said, ‘It’s still not won, but I think we will win this quite easily. So, if you can get to the milestone, why not? You must,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation.

KL Rahul hopes India will keep delivering like this as the World Cup progresses

KL Rahul, at the post-match press conference, said that Rohit Sharma scored his hundred and Virat Kohli also slammed his. Rahul is now expecting that as the World Cup goes on, a few more of the Indian batters will score hundreds and keep winning the matches. He also missed scoring his century by three runs in the first match against Australia.

India’s next assignment is on October 22 against New Zealand, the team, like India, is unbeaten so far. On that day, one team will face its first defeat of the tournament after continuously winning four matches. It will be interesting to see whether India keep playing like this and win matches or experience disappointments as the tournament progresses.
