On 19th October, Virat Kohli scored his 48th ODI century against Bangladesh in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Chasing a target of 257, Virat Kohli came in to bat after Rohit Sharma departed for 48 in the 13th over.
Another classic century while chasing, Virat scored 103 in 97 balls. In the first 3 balls he faced, Virat was treated to two free hits thanks to Hasan Mahmud. He rightfully dispatched those for a boundary and a maximum. He scored his 50 in 58 balls and scored the remaining 53 runs in 49 balls.
At one point in the match, India needed 19 runs while Kohli was at 81. It was then decided between Kohli and KL Rahul, his batting partner, that Kohli would go for the century and KL wont bat. Despite a wide by Hasan Mahmud, Virat scored the remaining runs required for his 48th century.
When India needed 2 runs to win and Virat Kohli needed 3 runs for his century, left arm spinner Nasum Ahmed bowled a ball down the leg side, which Virat moved away from. Despite being down the leg stump, Umpire Richard Kettleborough decided to not give it a wide. Virat finished the match two balls later with a six and also reached his century.
Fans divided after Virat Kohli’s 48th century
As KL Rahul denied to take strike to ensure Virat Kohli could reach his 48th century, fans started to form opposing opinions on the situation. Many fans said that Virat deserved to go for his century while others called him selfish for chasing a personal milestone.
Meanwhile fans thanked umpire Richard Kettleborough for not giving a wide despite the ball going down the legside. Many joked that he wanted Virat to reach his century as well. Others thanked KL Rahul for being the perfect team player and letting Virat score his century
