The Afghanistan Cricket Board has just announced their 15 man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup that will be held in India. Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead the side and includes a great mix of young and experienced players. But the biggest news coming out of the announcement is the comeback of right-arm pacer Naveen-ul-Haq.

The squad consists of IPL stars Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, Noor Ahmed, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman. Naveen-ul-haq makes his comeback in the squad despite not playing an ODI in 2 years. Gulbadin Naib has been left out despite a great showing in the 2023 Asia Cup.

Afghanistan’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup: 

  • Batsmen: Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Ibrahim Zadran, Riaz Hassan, Najibullah Zadran
  • Bowlers:  Abdul Rahman, Noor Ahmed, Mujib Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen-ul-Haq
  • All-rounders: Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rahmat Shah
  • Wicket-keepers: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ikram Alikhil

Fans can’t wait for Naveen-ul-Haq to face Virat Kohli

Naveen and Virat Kohli had a very public feud during the 2023 IPL. While Naveen was batting for his team, Lucknow Super Giants, he and Kohli had a heated exchange. After the match finished in RCB’s favor, during the post match handshakes he and Kohli again got into an altercation.  

Naveen claims Kohli caught his arm and Naveen reacted. Kohli was later caught in an ugly spat with LSG Mentor, Gautam Gambhir. The trio were fined by the IPL for their behavior. 

On the 11th of October, India will play Afghanistan in the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. While there was little hype for the match, the news of Naveen-ul-Haq’s inclusion in the team has gotten netizens excited.
