The reason why Virat Kohli did not play the first two Tests against England was due to “personal reasons” but what the personal reasons are, is not known yet. As the BCCI requested the media to respect Kohli’s privacy, fans opted not to dwell much on the reason, though they guessed it was due to Anushka Sharma’s second pregnancy.
Amidst the England second Test, rumors of Kohli’s mother’s illness started spreading, which Kohli’s brother Vikas Kohli quashed through an Instagram post. But Anushka’s pregnancy rumors were confirmed by Kohli’s former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate AB de Villiers.
De Villiers hosted a YouTube Live session to discuss India’s performance in the second Test match against England. A fan asked whether Kohli was doing well, to which de Villiers said he chatted with the Indian batter, before revealing that Kohli and Anushka are expecting their second child.
I did text him, and I did hear from him. I cannot give you too much information. All I know is he is fine and spending a bit of time with his family. That's the reason for missing the first few matches. I am not going to confirm anything else, unfortunately. But I would love to see him back. I cannot wait to see him back.De Villiers said on YouTube
De Villiers then read the chat he had with Kohli. He asked the Indian batter what he was doing to which Kohli said he just wanted to spend some time with his family. De Villiers then revealed that Kohli and Anushka are expecting their second child.
His second child is on the way. It's family time, it's priority and life. It's family and things, that are important to you.De Villiers added
Michael Atherton calls Ravindra Jadeja the second most valuable player after Virat Kohli
England edged past host India in the first Test in Hyderabad to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. England’s victory was termed “unbelievable” by former England captain Michael Atherton, because of India’s dominance on home soil.
India are missing the services of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja in the second Test along with Virat Kohli. Rahul and Jadeja sustained injuries during the first Test and while Rahul is expected to play the third Test, doubts loom over Jadeja’s availability.
Atherton, who played 115 Test matches, wrote in his column for The Times that Jadeja’s absence is a huge blow for India, calling the all-rounder “India’s second most valuable cricketer after Virat Kohli.”
Despite the unavailability of Kohli and Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal ensured India reached a respectable first-innings total (396) while Jasprit Bumrah ran through their opponents’ batting line-up to restrict them to 253.
