India all-rounder Washington Sundar made his debut in County Championship for Lancashire against Northamptonshire on Tuesday, July 19. He recalled his childhood days when he used to be Andrew Flintoff while playing Playstation while being with the same team.
“I remember playing with my Playstation and choosing Lancashire against most of the domestic teams here. It is great to be here and playing for Lancashire,” Washington said in an interview with the club’s official YouTube channel.
“Most importantly, I look forward to winning a lot of games and making memories with all. I used to be Andrew Flintoff because he would give me four overs of solid pace and swing, and obviously he could come down at six or seven and tonk some huge sixes.”
The 22-year-old also spoke about how he is excited to meet James Anderson and see his bowling.
“Obviously, James Anderson is a legend, he can swing the ball both ways. Looking forward to seeing him here, seeing him bowl and how he goes about his things,” he said.
“Red ball cricket means a lot to me”- Washington Sundar
When Washington Sundar made his debut for India, he was considered more of a white-ball player because of his ability to bowl tight lines and lengths in the powerplay. But he expressed his desire to play a lot of red ball cricket.
“Red ball cricket means a lot to me, and I’m someone who wants to play a lot of red-ball cricket, and for me to get an opportunity to play here that too with the red ball format is a great thing.”
He is also looking forward to playing in English conditions and that playing in England will push him out of his comfort zone when he will play with those cricketers he has never met in his life.
