In the Southern Stand of the MCG lies Bay 13, one of the most vocal and passionate sections. The fans are always making noise, chanting many things and always wearing lively costumes. But it is also one of the more hostile stands, with many shouting obscenities at the touring players.
During the Boxing Day Test, Wasim Akram recounted his encounter with Bay 13. In 1990 Australia and Pakistan played a 3-Test series. During the first Test, the former Pakistan captain was fielding near the section. He had just picked up a 6-wicket haul, which infuriated the crowd. As he reached there, Akram said the crowd started calling him a word which couldn’t be said on live, but it started with W and rhymed with “banker.”
Akram said he thought the crowd was praising him for his performance and thanked them. His captain, Imran Khan, ran up to him and asked what he was doing thanking the crowd. The pacer, who wasn’t well versed in English yet, said he was thanking the crowd for their praises. Khan told the pacer that they were abusing him. As Akram narrated this story, his co-hosts couldn’t stop laughing and started chanting, “Wasim is a banker.”
Wasim Akram gives his thoughts on the IPL vs PSL debates
Wasim Akram began his coaching career with the IPL, when he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders as a bowling coach. He held on to that role till 2017, being crucial for their IPL triumphs in 2012 and 2014. Indian pacers, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami, have credited the pacer for their success.
Right now he works in the PSL, coaching Karachi Kings. Before that he was with Islamabad United and Multan Sultans. When asked to pick between the IPL and PSL, the former Pakistan captain said the two cannot be compared.
I have worked in both; you cannot compare the two tournaments. IPL is huge and the PSL is huge in Pakistan as well, no doubt, it is like the mini-IPL of PakistanWasim Akram to SportsKeeda when made to choose between IPL and PSL
The 2024 PSL will begin on 13th February, with 6 teams participating. Akram’s Karachi Kings have failed to win in the past three seasons. KKR meanwhile have been one of the biggest underperforming teams in the IPL, failing to win since 2014. Their best result was being runner-ups in 2021.
