On 22nd October, India beat New Zealand by 4 wickets as they went on the top of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup group stage points table. They are the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far, winning all five matches they have played so far. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram had nothing but praise for the team, comparing it to a run-away train.
Working for A-Sports, a sports channel in Pakistan, Wasim Akram complimented the Indian side for having the right strategy. “India is like that runaway train that has its brakes failed. They are going that way,” said Akram on A Sports. “They have the weapons, have the merit, the skills and most importantly they know how to execute their plans,” added Akram.
Wasim Akram further complimented the Indian squad, saying the team was filled with players that could fit with any situation. Akram said squads should be like India’s and New Zealand, where a replacement is easily available. He said the squad should have players to rotate according to the pitch or opposition. He also said if any player isn’t in form, the squad should have a like to like player as well. Akram took the example of India, who replaced the injured Hardik Pandya with Mohammed Shami and dropped Shardul Thakur for Suryakumar Yadav, a batter.
Wasim Akram hits back at Ravi Shastri’s opinion on Shaheen Afridi
During India’s match with Pakistan on 14th October in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, Ravi Shastri had said everyone needs to stop overhyping Shaheen Afridi. Shastri called the left arm pacer a good bowler, but there is no need to exaggerate his abilities by comparing him to Akram.

Live on A-Sports, Wasim Akram said Shastri is entitled to his views, but believes Afridi is one the best in the world. He acknowledged the fact that Afridi was low in confidence, but said Afridi would make his comeback. Akram further said that the young pacer will regain his form as soon as he returns to Test cricket. Shaheen Afridi had a slow start in the World Cup, picking up 4 wickets in the first 3 matches. The next match he picked up his 2nd ODI five wicket haul against Australia, but Pakistan lost the match by 62 runs.
