America’s Tara Norris, who is playing for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) became the first-ever bowler to take a five-wicket haul. The incident happened during DC’s first match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday (March 5) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The 24-year-old sent world-class batters into packing to guide the Capitals to a 60-run victory.

RCB were chasing a huge target of 224 runs, and their openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine did give a solid start, stitching a 41-run stand between them, before Alice Capsey broke by dismissing the latter. Then she got rid of Mandhana as well.

After that, it was a Tara Norris show. In the 11th over, she dismissed two batters- Ellyse Perry (31 off 19) and Disha Kasat (9 off 11) and bagged two more in the 13th over, of Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja, and completed her fifer in the 18th over by dismissing Heather Knight (34 off 21). The Philadelphia-born Norris finished with the figures of 29/5 in her overs at an economy of 7.25. Her fifer restricted RCB to 163/8.

Notably, Norris is also the only player from an associate nation in the WPL. “There are quite a few world-class players and luckily I’ll get to train with some of them and hopefully play against a few of them. I am looking to learn and embrace as much as I can,” Norris said earlier this month to The Indian Express.

“Also, I have never been to India before. I will have to learn about the conditions and the climate here. I definitely want to do all the associate nations proud.” And she did in the first game itself. She then added that a lot of girls struggle with funding and facilities and that she will want to raise awareness for the associates. She hopes of seeing more players from the associate nations in the WPL.

Earlier, the Capitals, with skipper Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma announced DC’s arrival with scintillating knocks. They shared a 153-run partnership between them, with Lanning scoring 72 runs from 43 balls and Verma’s 84 off 45 balls. Later, Marizanne Kapp’s 39 off 17, plus Jemimah Rodrigues’ 22 off 15 took DC to 223/2 in their 20 overs.
