A video of former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir, has gone viral for the wrong reasons on 4th September. Gambhir is currently working for Star Sports for their coverage of the 2023 Asia Cup. He works as an analyst and a commentator for the competition.

During the match between India and Nepal in the 2023 Asia Cup, fans saw Gambhir walking and started chanting “Kohli Kohli.” Gambhir lost his cool and showed those fans the middle finger and walked away.

A fan that recorded the entire thing and uploaded it on X, and the video went viral in no time. Fans slammed Gambhir for his action and say that this behaviour by a Lok Sabha representative in a foreign country is unacceptable.

This isn’t the first time fans have targeted Gambhir. Due to the hostile relationship between Gambhir and Virat Kohli, fans have constantly targeted him. After Kohli and Gambhir had an ugly spat in Lucknow during the 2023 IPL, fans would keep chanting Kohli’s name whenever Gambhir was nearby.

In an interview after the incident, Gautam Gambhir said that the video was edited and whatever was in the video was completely wrong. He said the fans he showed the middle finger to were Pakistani fans who were shouting anti-India slogans. Many reports say the video was recorded during India and Pakistan’s match in the 2023 Asia Cup and not the India-Nepal match.

Gambhir said, “The crowd that was made up of Pakistani fans shouting anti-India slogans were also passing comments on Kashmir. As an Indian I can’t take anyone saying this about my country hence reacting this way. What you see on social media isn’t always the correct picture.”

He further asked fans to keep politics out of sports and just support your team. He also said that Pakistani fans were wrong to insult India and should’ve just watched the match.
