India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, when she gave away her wicket in a bizarre fashion, was full of emotions. She might have thought her dismissal was the decisive event of the all-important clash. Australia found themselves in a spot of bother when Harmanpreet was at the crease and they knew they somehow had to send the Indian skipper back to the pavilion to win the match.

She battled health issues to play in the semi-final but her 52 off 34 balls had gone in vain. And after that run-out, anger, disappointment, and shock were the emotions she was dealing with. She wore glasses to hide her tears in the post-match presentation ceremony.

But when ex-skipper Anjum Chopra went to give her a long hug, the 33-year-old Harmanpreet was inconsolable. Teammate Harleen Deol, who was not a part of the playing XI, tried her best to wipe the tears off Harmanpreet’s face. On being asked about the incident, Chopra said: “My intention was to give the captain some empathy because that’s all I can offer from the outside.

It was an emotional moment for both of us. India have reached the semi-finals a lot of times and they have lost. This is not the first time I’ve seen her battling her injuries and health. Today she might not have even played but because this was a World Cup semi-final and because she was Harmanpreet Kaur.”

Before the powerplay, India’s three top batters had headed back to the pavilion. At 28/3, Harmanpreet Kaur was joined by Jemimah Rodrigues, and both unleashed attacks on the bowlers. Jemimah became Darcie Brown‘s prey but as Harmanpreet was still at the crease, the Aussies knew scalping her wicket will be the turning point of the match.

In the 15th over, Harmanpreet swung her bat hard and went for a run but Ashleigh Gardner in the deep, ran to her right, and with a dive, she stopped the ball and straightaway threw it to the keeper who wasted no time in whipping the bails off.

Definitely, it was disappointing because the way I was batting, maybe that was the only way I could’ve got out. Otherwise, the way I was meeting the ball, I know how to take this innings till the end. But sometimes it happens in cricket and we have to accept whatever happens,” Harmanpreet said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
