New Zealand defeated Ireland in a thriller 3rd ODI by just one run on Saturday, July 15 at The Village in Malahide, in Ireland. The Kiwis whitewashed Ireland 3-0. When New Zealand were fieldings, Martin Guptill grabbed an excellent catch after dominating with the bat.
This happened in the 39th over when Ireland were at 271/3. Mitchell Santner was the bowler when, in his third ball, he Gareth Delany smashed an aggressive shot towards the cover region.
“It was always challenging. We potentially left a few out there,” Guptill told New Zealand Cricket. “I think if we had [lost] couple of less wickets at certain wickets, we could have really put the hammer down towards the end but to be able to get 360 and defend it, it was a great effort. Guptill saw the ball in the air and jumped up to catch it with his wrong hand. When the video surfaced online, it became instantly viral.

New Zealand scored 360 runs while batting first. Martin Guptill was the star for them when he piled up 115 runs off 126 balls, it was also his 18th ODI century. But Ireland also responded stunning when two of their batsmen, Paul Stirling and Harry Tector knotched up brilliant 179-run partnership between them and both of them had scored centuries.
“[Ireland’s chase] was impressive. They lost an early wicket and a little partnership and another wicket and obviously, a massive partnership. [For] chasing big totals like that, partnerships are a key and if they [Stirling and Tector] could’ve taken it another five-ten overs longer, that would’ve taken it away from us very quickly,” said Guptill.
“I think the boys came back really well,” Guptill said. “It’s pretty tough to defend on a ground like this – small ground, good wicket, fast outfield – and we got two guys in and going. It was tough to shut them down. I thought the guys stuck at it really well. They came out here and played with no fear, which is what you want to do when you’re batting, so it was good. Matt Henry, to take four [4-68] on that wicket, unbelievable effort,” he added.
