Just a few deliveries after losing two wickets in a single over, Shaheen Afridi and Mohammed Nawaz started to build a partnership to finish the Pakistan innings strong. The team had only two wickets in hand. Unfortunately what followed was a comedy of errors.
Colin Ackerman bowled around the wicket to Afridi and the latter went for the reverse sweep which he missed. The ball hit his hand and went short fine leg. Nawaz went for the run, but was sent back by Shaheen. The fielder threw it to the bowler’s end, where Ackermann fumbled the ball.
Seeing the fumble, Shaheen finally called for a run. Unfortunately Nawaz was late as a fielder collected the ball and ran the all-rounder out. Even in the replays, Nawaz was nowhere near the crease. The 29-year-old departed for 39 runs of 43 balls.
Pakistan soon lost their last wicket sixteen balls later. Haris Rauf ensured he put some runs on the board after he hit Ackermann for a boundary and a maximum in the two balls before he was stumped.
Netherlands put up a fight against Asian giants
After missing out on three World Cup, the Netherlands finally featured in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, their first after the 2011 edition. In their first match, they had to face the 1992 World Cup Champions, Pakistan.
After winning the toss, they elected to bowl first and started off with a bang after dismissing three batters in the powerplay, including captain Babar Azam. Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel built a brilliant partnership of 120 runs before being dismissed. After a late resistance by Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, Pakistan put up a score of 286 before being bowled out.
Netherlands lost 2 wickets in the first four overs, but thanks to half centuries by Vikram Singh and Bas de Leede, Netherlands are still in the game. After quick dismissals of Vikram Singh, Teja Tidamanaru and captain Scott Edwards, Pakistan are currently in the driving seat.
