India pacer Mohammed Siraj shined in front of his family at his home ground, that is at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, here on Wednesday (January 18). He rarely fails to give breakthroughs with the new ball and produced the same against New Zealand in the first ODI.

He first dismissed in-form batter Devon Conway for 10 (which was also his maiden international scalp at home ground), then went on to dismiss stand-in skipper Tom Latham, Mitchell Santner, and Henry Shipley. Michael Bracewell and Santner were slowly steering the score to the target when Siraj’s short delivery broke the crucial stand.

Bracewell went on to score a stunning 140 from just 78 balls, laced with 12 boundaries and 10 maximums before Shardul Thakur trapped him for LBW in the last over. His wicket helped India bundle out the visitors for 337 as the Men in Blue won the match by 12 runs and are leading the three-match ODI series by 1-0.

Earlier, India put on a massive 349/8 total, courtesy of Shubman Gill’s 208 runs from 149 balls. Apart from him, no other batters could even reach the 35-run mark. Rohit Sharma was the second-highest-run scorer with 34 from 38 balls.

Siraj has been in stunning form in recent times. In India’s last ODI series against Sri Lanka, the 28-year-old emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the series, including a four-wicket haul in the final ODI. His four-wicket haul helped his side restrict Dasun Shanaka-led Lankans to just 73 runs while chasing a mammoth 391. Owing to his brilliant performance, the Hyderabad-born moved up in the ICC’s ODI bowling ranking, at the number three spot.

Mohammed Siraj has made his debut for India in ODIs against Australia in 2019. He played 19 ODI matches and scalped 33 wickets at an economy of 4.73.
