WATCH: Pakistan penalised 5 runs after Babar Azam’s “illegal fielding” in 2nd ODI vs WI

Babar Azam

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam had cost his team five runs while fielding against West Indies in Multan. In the 29th over, Babar picked up one of the wicket-keeping gloves and used it to pick up the ball behind the stumps. This action was considered illegal by the on-field umpire and so five extra runs were added to West Indies’ total.

As per Laws of cricket – 28.1 Protective equipment – “No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards. In addition, protection for the hand or fingers may be worn only with the consent of the umpires”.

Losing 5 runs had no negative impact on Pakistan because they won the second ODI by a huge margin of 120 runs and took an unassailable 2-0 in the three-match ODI series. Babar Azam had smashed his 9th consecutive 50-plus score in all formats after his match-winning third consecutive century in the first ODI. He played a knock of 77 runs off 93 balls with five fours and a six. Opener Imam-ul-Haq also played a 72-run knock and their team posted a target of 275/8.

West Indies responded by getting bowled out in just 32.2 overs for 155. Opener Kyle Mayers scored 33 off 25 runs while Shamarh Brooks scored 42 runs from 56 balls. Other batsmen couldn’t even score above 25 and because of Mohammad Nawaz’s four-wicket haul. Nawaz picked the wickets of Brooks, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, and Rovman Powell. While Mohammad Wasim scalped three wickets- of Mayers, Alzarri Joseph, and Anderson Phillip.
