Ravichandran Ashwin tries Mankading Steve Smith
It’s needless to say that India’s one of greatest off-spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin, doesn’t shy away from Mankading the batter at the non-striker’s end. He is the reader of the Laws of cricket and knows what is right and what is wrong.
This habit of his has always landed him in trouble, but on Twitter only. Many cricketers, former cricketers, and fans have questioned the spirit of cricket. But Ashwin knows that running a non-striker is within the laws of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
One such incident took place during Day 3 of the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Sunday (February 19) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. This time, he did not make an attempt to run out Australia’s Steve Smith but would have dismissed him if the latter did not scamper back behind the crease.
The incident happened during the 15th over of Australia’s second innings. Ashwin completed his run-up and was about to deliver the ball to Marnus Labuschagne, but stopped after seeing that Smith was backing up a bit. Smith quickly rushed back to the crease and this drew a smile on Labuschagne face. At the same time, Virat Kohli, who was at the slip, saw what just happened, burst into laughter, and started clapping.

Ravichandran Ashwin dismisses Steve Smith twice in 2nd Test

Ashwin is an annihilator in home Tests. Steve Smith, who is one of the best Test batsmen in the world right now, fell twice from Ashiwn’s delivery in the second Test. After a strong start by the visitors, Ashwin, in the first session on Day 3, looked threatening as he sent back Travis Head, then went on to dismiss Smith as well.
During Aussie’s first innings, Smith departed for a duck off two balls off Ashwin’s delivery. It’s worth noting that this is for the second time Ashwin dismissed the World No.2 for a duck. Previously, the 36-year-old off-spinner sent the former Aussie skipper for zero in the 2020/2021 series.
That was also the first time a bowler dismissed Smith for a duck. Ashwin has so far dismissed Smith seven times in just 22 innings in Test cricket.
Talking about the match, Ravindra Jadeja’s match-winning seven-wicket haul landed the Aussies in trouble as they could set a meager 114-run target. India, with small contributions from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara comfortably drove India to the target to win the match by six wickets, taking a lead of 2-0 in the four-match series.
