Hardik Pandya surpassed all expectations and Gujarat Titans had been brilliant in the league stages, finishing top with 10 wins from their 14 matches. They had beaten Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 1 which booked them a place in the finals in their first-ever season. They had kept this form in the finals also as they beat Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets to clinch their first IPL trophy in their maiden season at their home ground Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 29.

They were able to restrict RR to just 130 runs after Hardik Pandya’s all-round performance with the bat and ball. Hardik Pandya with the ball first dismissed the heart of RR, Jos Buttler, which was followed by RR skipper Sanju Samson and the Carribean big-hitter Shimron Hetmyer’s wicket. The Royals never recovered from this because after getting rid of Buttler, wickets kept falling and RR ended up with a paltry 130 total.

At the end when Riyan Parag entered the field, he tried his best to add some crucial runs but couldn’t do much because there was no one to score runs from the other end. Trent Boult and Obed McCoy did try to hit a couple of sixes but that wasn’t enough.

But, eventually in the 2nd ball of the penultimate over, Parag hit a boundary off Mohammed Shami but the latter had the last laugh as he bowled a searing 145 kmph yorker to send Parag’s off-stump had gone flying to end the innings with 130 runs. Parag had scored 15 runs in 15 balls.

But RR had hoped their bowlers would could bring them back to the game but couldn’t defend a low total and Gujarat, with Shubman Gill’s 45, Hardik Pandya’s 34 and the best finishing touches from David Miller‘s 32 off 19 balls helped Gujarat Titans kick start their IPL journey with a victory just like RR did in 2008.
