Chennai Super Kings (CSK) players made their last match of IPL 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium memorable as they took a lap of honour after their game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was done and dusted. MS Dhoni led the charge as the CSK skipper threw team t-shirts and hit tennis balls into the stands. Meanwhile, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar surprised Dhoni with his gesture.

As the Chennai players walked casually along the boundary ropes thanking the crowd, Gavaskar sneaked in and asked Dhoni for his autograph. This left even Dhoni surprised who could not stop smiling. The former India captain then signed on Gavaskar’s shirt and hugged the legendary cricketer.

Notably, Chennai played their last home game of IPL 2023 against KKR on Sunday. Although the four-time champions lost the game by six wickets, the home crowd never stopped roaring for the four-time champions. The players also reciprocated it by taking a lap of honour and thanking the crowd for their support.

However, this might not be the last game for CSK at Chepauk as the four-time champions look all set to return for the playoffs. CSK are set to play in either Qualifier 1 or Eliminator, both of which are scheduled at Chepauk.

Hopes of Qualifier 1 hang by a thread for CSK

After the defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday, CSK’s hopes for a top-two finish and playing Qualifier 1 were severely dented. With only one game left to play, CSK can reach a maximum of 17 points. And there is very much a possibility of them getting surpassed by Mumbai Indians (14 points) who have two games left.

Nevertheless, the MS Dhoni-led team still have a big chance to make it to the playoffs and win their fifth trophy. The CSK captain looked unfazed by the defeat as did not single out any department. Dhoni said that the dew factor made the difference. “I think the dew made a big difference. If you compare the first innings to the second innings, there was a lot more purchase for the spinners in the first innings and that’s what really got to us,” said Dhoni.
