Virat Kohli shouts after racing to his 1st ton after three years in ODI cricket against Bangladesh

Former India captain Virat Kohli has displayed why he is amongst the greats. Although headlines about his return to form have gradually lessened, when the talismanic batter scored his 44th ODI ton, he reminded everyone that it came after three years, and that’s how great players are defined. They can come back despite a three-year lean patch.

The 34-year-old batter started his knock well after Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket, but he slowly raced to his ton off 85 balls after which, he celebrated by shouting, “The f***ing years boss“. It was a mature and calm celebration unlike the young Kohli.

His previous ton in ODI came in 2019 against West Indies. But it wasn’t his first ton since he got his form back as in the Asia Cup 2022 match against Afghanistan, he announced his return in style to end the century draught with his maiden hundred in T20Is.

After completing his century, Kohli soon lost his wicket in the 42nd over bowled by Shakib Al Hasan. Kohli scampered down the track to smash the ball toward wide long off but bottom-edged it to Mehidy Hasan. The right-handed batter then walked back after a 91-ball 113 runs, studded with 11 fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 124.18.

It’s such a rare occurrence when Kohli’s ton gets overshadowed. Ishan Kishan stole the limelight with his double ton. He took just 126 balls to reach the mark, scoring the fastest 200 in international cricket.

His 131-ball 210-run knock was decorated with 24 fours and 10 maximums at a strike rate of 160.31. Taskin Ahmed ended his knock in the 36th over when Kishan pumped away the hard-length ball down the ground but Litton Das from long on completed an excellent running catch.

Apart from these two, other batters didn’t play brilliant innings, still, India had put runs enough to make it a tough target for Bangladesh. Kohli and Kishan also stitched a 290-run stand for the second wicket. The Men in Blue ended up putting on 409/8 in their 50 overs. Ebadot Hossain, Shakib, and Taskin scalped two, while Mehidy picked up one wicket.
