India and Australia are locking horns in their first match of the 2023 ODI World Cup on October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In the third over of Australia’s innings, Jasprit Bumrah came in to bowl his second over. In the previous over he troubled Mitchell Marsh and David Warner but was unable to pick up any wickets. Finally in this over, he managed to dismiss Marsh thanks to an amazing catch by Virat Kohli

Mitchell Marsh went to block the first ball but Bumrah induced an inside edge. The next ball Bumrah bowled on the 4th stump and Marsh induced a heavy edge that went to the left of Virat Kohli.

Being the only man in the slip corden wasn’t a problem for King Kohli as he lept and caught the ball ensuring Mitchell Marsh was dismissed. Mitchell Marsh departed to the pavilion for a duck after facing six deliveries.

Virat Kohli sets new record after taking Mitchell Marsh’s catch

As Virat Kohli caught Mitchell Marsh, he broke Anil Kumble’s record of the most catches taken in the World Cup by an Indian outfield fielder. In 28 matches, Kohi took 15 catches and surpassed Kumble’s record of 14 catches.

Kumble had 14 catches in 18 matches. After Kumble, the 3rd most catches were taken by Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar, with 12 catches. 

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first in the Chennai heat. India started off well as Bumrah dismissed Marsh for a duck, but Steve Smith and David Warner built a partnership worth 69 runs. That partnership was then broken by chinaman, Kuldeep Yadav, who dismissed David Warner for 41 runs. 

India play against Australia without opener Shubman Gill, who had tested positive for dengue. Ishan Kishan replaced the highest run scorer for India in 2023. Ravichandran Ashwin also returned to play his first World Cup match since 2018.
