The Indian team had a terrible day on the field in their match against New Zealand in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Despite picking up 2 wickets in the powerplay, New Zealand put up a target of 274 against India. After the Indian team dropped Daryl Mitchell twice, Virat Kohli finally took a screamer to dismiss the all-rounder.
Daryl Mitchell was dismissed in the 2nd last ball of the New Zealand innings. Mohammed Shami was given the ball for the last over. He bowled the ball full and outside off. Mitchell tried launching the ball over deep-midwicket but only connected the toe of the bat to the ball. Virat Kohli at wide long-on ran to hit right and dived to take a brilliant catch. Thanks to Virat Kohli’s stunner, Mohammed Shami got his second ODI World Cup five wicket haul as well.
New Zealand batters, Rachin Ravindra and Daryll Mitchell, were instrumental in ensuring New Zealand reached the score of 273. Even though he didn’t play the first four matches in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, Mohammed Shami picked up five wickets for the 2nd time in 2023. India started the chase strong, with the openers putting up a partnership of 71. Rohit Sharma was then bowled by Lockie Feguson for 48. Two overs later Lockie Ferguson dismissed Shubman Gill as well, with India being 76-2. India are currently 100/2 in 15.4 overs, with Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer batting for India. The play had been delayed due to inclement weather, but it has resumed.
Ravi Shashtri critical of Indian fielding, says India could’ve restricted New Zealand for a lower score
Former India Head Coach and commentator, Ravi Shastri, was not happy with the fielding efforts of the Indian Cricket Team. Ravindra Jadeja had dropped Rachin Ravindra while fielding at point. Ravindra had scored 12 runs when he was dropped and went on to score 75. Daryl Mitchell was dropped twice, once by KL Rahul and once by Jasprit Bumrah. Mitchell rightfully punished the Indian side by scoring a century.
Talking about India’s fielding efforts, Ravi Shastri on-air, said, “270 is 270. They are runs on the board. Had those catches been taken, India would have well restricted New Zealand to 235-240. For 270, you have to bat well. There is no given that you are going to win the game. You will have to play exceptionally well because New Zealand’s strength is their fielding. Plus they will be bowling with the new ball and that will be the contest.”
