Pakistan‘s chance to qualify for the semifinal has been hanging in thin air, for they registered three defeats on the trot (against India, Australia, and Afghanistan). Against the Afghans, the Men in Green lost an ODI match for the first time at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday (October 23).

While chasing 283 runs, Afghanistan got off to a great start, with openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran scoring 130 runs together for the first wicket. Later Rahmat Shah and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi ensured their efforts did not go in vain and their careful innings slowly took them past the target.

Shahidi hit the winning run by sending the ball toward the square leg boundary. In the commentary box, former Pakistani bowler Waqar Younis watched Pakistan’s humiliating defeat with a long face and remained speechless for a while.

The video of his sad expression surfaced on social media and went viral. Here’s the video:

It is very hurting. But I’m happy for Afghanistan. Also, don’t forget because they deserve it. The way they handled the pressure, the way they played cricket. I’m happy for them. I am gutted because you know what I’ve seen today,” Younis said on Star Sports.

Pakistan reached 282/7 in their 50 overs on a tough Chennai pitch following contributions from Abdullah Shafique (58 off 75), Babar Azam (74 off 92), Shadab Khan (40 off 38), and Iftikhar Ahmed (40 off 27). Their average bowling efforts and sloppy fielding were some of the reasons behind their eight-wicket loss to their neighbors.
