“Revisiting the 2002 miracle at Lord’s”- Mohammad Kaif relives Natwest series final’s thrilling victory against England
Netwest final
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif shared a video on his official Twitter handle where, with him, several other ex-cricketers relived the historic Natwest tri-series final’s thrilling victory against England on July 13, in 2002 at the iconic Lord’s.
Mohammad Kaif, who had remained unbeaten at 87 off 75 balls admitted that it was a knock which gave him love, respect, and everything. He shared the video with the caption:
“Twenty years back, I played an inning that gave me an identity, fame and love for a lifetime. Revisiting the 2002 Miracle at Lord’s with family and friends and answering the question that I always get asked- How did you manage to chase 326?”
The host, England, with the strong batting performance by Marcus Trescothick and skipper Nasser Hussain, set a mammoth target of 326. India responded with Virender Sehwar and Saurav Ganguly adding 106-run opening partnership in just 14.3 overs. However, Dinesh Mongia, Sachin Tendulkar, and Rahul Dravid only added 28 runs.
In 2002 only, Kaif debuted for India in ODI. When India were at 146/5, Kaif put a 121-run stand with Yuvraj Singh. Although, Yuvraj got out after scoring 69 runs off 63 balls, Kaif stayed till the end and with two wickets left, India reached the target. It was the same match where the then India captain Saurav Ganguly took off his jersey and waved it in the air. This moment also remains one of the hallmark moments that Saurav Ganguly’s stint as India captain is known for.
“A phenomenal achievement”- Rahul Dravid praises Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh
Current India head coach Rahul Dravid also lauded Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif for their performance at the crucial moment.
“It was a day when two young men, who had already shown their talent at the junior level, came really good in a high-pressure situation on a very big day. Big credit to Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif, who were obviously setting incredible standards with the way they were fielding and the energy they were creating on the field.
