Australia's 'Clever Ploy' to avoid slow- over penalty in T20 World Cup
The Australian team has come up with a unique way to avoid the slow-over penalty in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. Earlier this year, ICC introduced an in-game penalty to stop the over-rate. According to the body, if the bowling team fails to complete its over within the time limit, then one fielder will have to stay inside the circle for the rest of the overs.
But Australia have found a way to deal with this problem. They are stationing the benchwarmers around the boundary rope during the powerplay. These players will throw the ball to the players on the ground to save precious time.

“I think it’s common sense to do that”- Ashton Agar
Australian star all-rounder Ashton Agar, during a chat with cricket.com.au., said that it makes sense to do that because there aren’t many fielders on the fence during the powerplay to fetch the ball.
“In the powerplay, obviously the ball flies around and you lose time when players have to go and fetch the ball, which is part of cricket,” said Agar.
“So, stationing guys, who are on the bench, around the ground…does it save you 10 seconds here and there? Potentially. And that all adds up at the end of the day,” he added.
Agar further stated that doing so won’t give a team an advantage but it’s common sense to do that in the powerplay.
“It’s not really giving you an advantage. It just makes sense. I think it’s common sense in the powerplay to do that because you don’t have guys out there fielding on the fence,” added Agar.
