One often hears about Gautam Gambhir criticizing MS Dhoni or blaming fans for crediting Dhoni for the ICC trophies. Captain Cool usually doesn’t criticize his teammates publicly or through social media but once he got irked so much due to Gambhir that he had to complain to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Though how true the story is cannot be confirmed, CricketNext back then reported that Dhoni called Gambhir “selfish” because of a knock during a Test match against England. England toured India in 2012 and though the home team won the first match, England under Alaister Cook clinched the four-match series 2-1.

As per the report, this happened after the second match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Team India got bundled out for 142 runs with Gambhir emerging as the top run scorer (65), but the knock was reportedly termed as selfish by Dhoni, accusing Gambhir of saving his wicket when India were facing a collapse.

In 2022, Gautam Gambhir finally cleared the air about the rumored rift with MS Dhoni. During a chat show on YouTube, Gambhir said he has respect for Dhoni because of his contribution to the Indian Cricket Team.

Gambhir’s comments in praise of Dhoni often take fans by surprise because of the past statements. Once he claimed Dhoni had the ability to break the white-ball records had he batted at the No.3 position, praising the 42-year-old for always prioritizing the team’s requirements first before individual achievements.
