“Why not reduce it from 50 to 40 now”- Ravi Shastri advocates reduction of overs in ODIs

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has suggested of reduction of ODI overs from 50 to 40 in order to preserve the format. He also said that the organizers have to be forward-thinking.
The discussion about ODI cricket has come under the scanner after Ben Stokes’ retirement from the format. Stokes recently left playing the 50-over game and reasoned that playing all-format cricket is “unsustainable”. He will play T20I and Tests from now.
Several prominent persons from the cricketing community has opined what they think about the format. Wasim Akram even stated that ODI cricket should be scrapped from international cricket.
The latest critic of ODI cricket is former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi. He told Samaa TV that the sport should at least be shortened to make it more interesting.
“One-day cricket has become quite boring now. I would suggest to cut ODI cricket from 50 overs to 40 overs in order to make it entertaining,” said Afridi.

“There is no harm in shortening the span of the game”- Ravi Shastri

During the second ODI between India and West Indies, Ravi Shastri said on FanCode, agreeing to what Afridi stated earlier.
“There is no harm in shortening the span of the game. When one-day cricket started, it was of 60 overs. When we won the World Cup in 1983, it was of 60 overs. After that, people thought that 60 overs were a bit too long. People found that span of overs between 20 to 40 hard to digest. So they reduced it from 60 to 50. So years have gone by now since that decision so why not reduce it from 50 to 40 now. Because you got to be forward-thinking and evolve. It stayed for 50 for too long,” he said.
