This 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed a surge of 200-plus totals. In 39 matches played so far, the skyrocketing totals above 200 have reached over 20 times, the most in any season of the cash-rich league.

It surpassed last year’s record of 18 200-plus totals. At the same time, seven times both the teams reached the 200-run mark in a single match, crossing last year’s record where both the teams crossed the mark five times. Not only this, the run rates are currently at 8.91 and the highest in the previous seasons was 8.64 ( in 2022). There might be more totals above 200 can be seen in this IPL as over 30 matches are still left to be played.

Former India head coach Anil Kumble thinks the reason behind such frequent 200 totals this year is the Impact Player rule. He reckoned that having an extra bowler or a batsman is helping a team have a perfect all-rounder.

“You can see a lot more 200+ scores this season than perhaps what we saw in previous seasons at this stage of the tournament. According to me, it’s because you have an extra batter and bowler. So you basically have a perfect all-rounder in your team despite not having one. Previously, most teams had one or one-and-a-half all-rounders and different kinds of challenges. But this season, every team can fill that gap by using the impact player,” Kumble told Jio Cinema in a recent interaction.

Impact Player rule is helping spinners also?

Amit Mishra

Several times teams like Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants have played two-leg spinners while bowling. LSG use Amit Mishra as an Impact Player who has not disappointed the team.

RR use Adam Zampa alongside Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin in some of their games. In fact, spinners scalping 190-plus wickets this year is also the highest in the history of the tournament. The Impact Player rule is certainly affecting IPL matches a great deal.
