The unprecedented Bazball approach by the English Test team has taken the cricket world by storm. But many felt the real test of Ben Stokes and Co. will be against the new World Test Championship (WTC) winner Australia when the two would lock horns in the 2023 Ashes series.

Bazball was heavily ridiculed when England lost the first two Tests by two wickets and 43 runs respectively. England were on the brink of a demoralizing series defeat in Headingley when the hosts pulled off a brilliant victory.

They would have tied the series if they had won the fourth Test but rain washed away their chances and they ended up winning the fifth Test to tie the series 2-2, though, couldn’t retain the Ashes. After the win, English skipper Ben Stokes was asked whether Bazball would work against India when they will tour the subcontinent next year for a five-match Test series.

I remember when we beat New Zealand 3-0, (the chatter) was we couldn’t do it against Pakistan, (we) couldn’t do it against Australia. So who knows if we can do it against India, only time will tell,” Stokes said at the post-match presentation of the fifth Ashes Test at the Oval in London.

England’s condition was worse when it was under Joe Root but the Englishman relinquished his post last year. Ben Stokes took up the position and he and coach Brendon Mccullum revamped their game from which came the famous Bazball.

Their approach invited scrutiny as it was contrasting with the traditional method of Test cricket. But despite that, they did not discontinue their fast-paced Test batting and surprisingly, they ended up winning 14 out of their 18 Test matches.

They defeated New Zealand 3-0, then secured the series against South Africa 2-1. In Pakistan, they won by 3-0, before tieing the Ashes. And now, the much-awaited series is their tour of India in February next year. Indian pitches are infamous for being slow and spinners, mainly Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, rule here.
