“Would have made a difference if MS Dhoni was captain from the start” – Ravi Shastri reviews CSK’s IPL 2022 season

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful sides in the tournaments history endured one of their most difficult season’s in the IPL. Finishing 9th just above Mumbai Indians. Chennai’s entire season was filled with instability, injuries and controversies. One of their biggest disadvantages was the unavailability of pacer, Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out of the entire tournament before it even began.

Reviewing the entire season, here’s what Ravi Shastri said to ESPN Cricinfo, “It would have made a big difference if MS Dhoni had been the captain right from the start. But the biggest problem for CSK was Deepak Chahar’s unavailability. He is the type of pacer who can give you one or two wickets upfront. They definitely missed that. He would have taken a lot of wickets this season, considering the pitches. There was some swing on offer with the new ball and the surfaces were perfect for his game.”

“MS Dhoni will persist with the youngsters” – Ravi Shastri on CSK’s future plans

Ravi Shastri was impressed by the young bowlers of the CSK side. Citing that Simirjeet Singh, Mukesh Choudhry and Maheesh Theekshana will surely continue under MS Dhoni. However, he pointed out that more improvements are needed. The veteran said, “If Dhoni is the captain for the next season, he will surely persist with youngsters like Mukesh Choudhary, Simarjeet Singh and Maheesh Theekshana. These guys will improve. However, they will have to try and rope in a middle-order batter and a fast bowler when the transfer window opens.”

Ravi Shastri believes that even though this season ended in disappointment for the team, they have laid the foundation of young players around whom they can build a strong side with MSD to lead, at least for next year.
