“Yeh bandhan toh…” Fans react as R Ashwin shines for Rajasthan Royals against his ex-team Chennai Super Kings

Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings hosted Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday (12 April) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The CSK captain won the toss and opted to bowl first. Dhoni’s decision seemed to augur well for CSK as Tushar Deshpande got rid of in-form Yashaswi Jaiswal. Devdutt Padikkal and Jos Buttler, however, stitched a partnership to irritate CSK.

But soon, Ravindra Jadeja got into action and claimed back-to-back wickets. The CSK spinner removed Padikkal and Sanju Samson on consecutive deliveries. This tempted the RR management to promote R Ashwin. The move worked well enough as Ashwin added 30 valuable runs off 22 deliveries. After Ashwin was dismissed, Buttler and other RR batters helped the 2008 champions to reach 175/8 in their designated 20 overs.

It was then on the bowlers to continue the momentum and Sandeep Sharam exactly did that. The RR pacer sent back in-form Ruturaj Gaikwad to provide an early breakthrough for his team. But Ajinkya Rahane and Devon Conway stitched a half-century stand to keep CSK in the chase. Samson, meanwhile, trusted Ashwin to break the partnership and the veteran spinner did not disappoint at all.

Ashwin trapped Rahan LBW and soon also got rid of struggling Shivam Dube. The off-spinner ended his spell with two wickets against his name which came at the expense of 25 runs. With Ashwin shining against his ex-team at his home ground, fans started reacting on social media.

Ashwin gets Player of the Match

The veteran spinner got the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance. Ashwin talked about his performance at length at the post-match performance. He first talked about his batting promotion. Ashwin then shed light on his excellent bowling performance.

“I surprise people I guess. Whenever I walk out to bat, people assume I just took that decision and came out, but that’s a role given to me, we lost Sanju and I had to do a job. I am far better at judging my strengths, I take a few balls to get going,” said Ashwin. “I feel I am able to get good grip and drop on the ball at the right lengths. If I was not able to do those things in the two years (with Punjab Kings) then I wouldn’t be able to do it here. Success or failure, it has to be on my own terms.”
