“You go flat no matter who you are,” Ravi Shastri decodes Rohit Sharma’s struggles as captain in IPL 2023

Although MI have done a good job as compared to the previous edition, they have still a long way to go to reach the same level of dominance they used to have.

“You go flat no matter who you are,” Ravi Shastri decodes Rohit Sharma’s struggles as captain in IPL 2023

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has debunked Rohit Sharma’s struggle as captain in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sharma, who is the most successful captain in IPL history with five titles to his name, has failed to live up to his reputation in the last two editions of the tournament. While Mumbai finished as the wooden spooners in IPL 2022, the sixteenth edition of the tournament has not been that great either.

Mumbai Indians are placed at the sixth position in the points table with five wins in ten matches played so far. The Rohit Sharma-led team suffered a defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their last league-stage match. The five-time champions failed to put a fight with both bat and ball and suffered a humiliating defeat.

Although MI have done a good job as compared to the previous edition, they have still a long way to go to reach the same level of dominance they used to have. But MI’s struggle to get going has raised quite a few questions about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. A few cricket pundits have questioned the decisions made by Rohit on the field.

Lack of resources causing problems for Rohit and MI

Meanwhile, Ravi Shastri has explained the reasons behind Rohit Sharma’s struggles. The former India head coach has said that Rohit’s job has doubled as MI don’t have the same kind of resources they had a few years back.

“The resources that you had two or three years ago isn’t quite the same. The challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago when everything was nice, set – go out there and do the job,” Shastri said about Rohit’s captaincy on ESPNcricinfo.

“And then comes the challenge of how do you get them [the team] going, how do you motivate that bunch, how do you create a combination, how do you see who is the best in that lot to fit in and deliver at a certain stage of the game. It’s a period in which they have lost players who formed their core in the glory years, there have been retirements, and injuries to key players.”
