Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar pointed out that Indian management made no mistake by dropping a pacer to include a spinner for the 2023 Asia Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 17-member squad on August 21 and in all possibilities, the majority of the same faces could be seen in the ODI World Cup squad.

The pace department has Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur, including fast-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur. Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav will handle the spin department.

Manjrekar, on Star Sports/ESPN Cricinfo’s ‘Selection Day Live’ program, agreed with captain Rohit Sharma’s statement by citing Yuvraj Singh’s example. Yuvraj was the Player of the Series in the 2011 ODI World Cup where Team India led by MS Dhoni was crowned as world champions.

Manjrekar said that even though the World Cup was held in India, instead of the spinners, the pitches proved more favorable for the pacers. He pointed out that though spinners rule in Tests in India, for the World Cup, the curators put extra effort and prepare flat belters.
