Rajasthan Royals have suffered their first defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, thanks to an outstanding performance from Royal Challengers Bangalore duo Dinesh Karthik and Shahbaz Ahmed. As the Faf du Plessis-led side chased down 170 with five deliveries to spare, the two dashers made a mockery of RR’s famed bowling line-up. Both RR and RCB have two wins in three games this season.
Earlier in the game, RCB won the toss and chose to bowl at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. David Willey justified the decision with an outstanding first over, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over. Nonetheless, an in-form Jos Buttler teamed up with Devdutt Padikkal to steady the ship with a 70-run stand. While Padikkal was out for a well-paced 37, Buttler crossed the 50-run mark for the second time.
The dasher, on the other hand, was cautious throughout the inning, which reflects the pitching conditions. Meanwhile, skipper Sanju Samson was dismissed for a run-a-ball eight after failing to make his bat talk this time. Buttler then found a significant partner in Shimron Hetmyer, who has recently emerged as a formidable finisher. As RR finished at 169/3 in their allotted 20 overs, the duo played some delightful shots in the final overs.

After a batting collapse, RCB made an incredible comeback with the help of Dinesh Karthik and Shahbaz Ahmed

While Buttler remained unbeaten on 70, Hetmyer amassed 42 points off 31 deliveries. In response, RCB got off to a fast start, with skipper Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat combining for 55 runs for the first wicket. However, the game was turned on its head when RCB lost four wickets in seven runs. Yuzvendra Chahal took two of these wickets, putting the RCB in a difficult situation.
However, the evergreen Dinesh Karthik teamed up with Shahbaz Ahmed, and the duo put RR on the back foot with their outstanding strokeplay. The two dashers were equally brilliant, as the required run rate was quickly reduced. While Shahbaz was dismissed in the 18th over for a 26-ball 45, there was no twist in the tale. Dinesh Karthik remained unbeaten on 44 off 23 balls as RCB won by four wickets in 19.1 overs.
