“We will deal with it appropriately”: Sourav Ganguly shares BCCI’s action plan following Virat Kohli’s sensational remarks

The transition of India’s white-ball captaincy from Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma has been the talk of the town. While Kohli had announced his decision of stepping down from the T20I captaincy, his tenure as India’s ODI captain came to an abrupt end as BCCI named Rohit as India’s new ODI captain without any reason over the former skipper’s removal.

It was the way that Kohli was stripped off the captaincy that sparked a storm before Sourav Ganguly stepped in to clear the air. Ganguly asserted that Kohli was asked not to step down as the T20I captain and his decision to step down forced the selectors to remove him from ODI captaincy as “they cannot have two white-ball captains in two white-ball formats, that’s too much of leadership.”

Kohli made some big revelations in a press conference ahead of the South Africa tour. “Whatever was said about the communication that happened about the decision that was made was inaccurate. I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8 for the Test series and there was no prior communication to me at all since I announced my decision on T20I captaincy.

When I left the T20I captaincy, I had first approached BCCI and intimated them of my decision and laid down my point of view in front of them (office bearers). I gave the reasons why I wanted to quit T20 captaincy and my viewpoint was received very nicely. There was no offence, no hesitation and not for once was I told that ‘you should not leave T20 captaincy’,” he added.

Virat Kohli’s explosive comments in the press conference conflicts that made by Sourav Ganguly. The lack of coordination has only worsened the situation as speculations over the relationship of the governing body and Kohli rise. This is the first time under the former Indian skipper’s tenure as BCCI boss that such a case of miscommunication has arisen.

When quizzed over BCCI’s response over Kohli’s remarks, Sourav Ganguly told local media persons on Thursday, “No statements, no press conference. We will deal with it appropriately, leave it to (the) BCCI.

If the speculations of a rift between Virat Kohli and the management is true, then the upcoming years are all set to be rocky for Indian cricket. Kohli is arguably the best all-format player going around and issues around captaincy will affect not only affect Virat the batsman but will also reflect on the performance of the team.

With a new captain and coach duo trying to settle in, the BCCI must focus on getting over this issue as soon as possible. The upcoming decade will feature an ICC event every year and the Indian team will have to let go of these issues if they are to overcome the disastrous performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup and put a strong case in the tournaments that follow.
