T20 World Cup 2021: Shane Warne predicts the winner of the tournament

Shane Warne picks his favourites between Australia and New Zealand

The 2021 ICC T20 World Cup is set to be a Trans-Tasman affair as Australia and New Zealand are set to lock horns on Sunday. Meanwhile, former Aussie spinner Shane Warne has picked the kangaroos as favourites to lift the trophy for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The Aaron Finch-led side reached the ultimate game of the tournament after defeating Pakistan in a nail-biting semi-final clash earlier this week. Prior to this, Kane Williamson’s men had similarly beaten England in Abu Dhabi.

In a recent video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Warne reckoned that the momentum is with the ‘Men in Yellow’ after their previous triumph. He stated:

“It’s been a cracking tournament so far and how good were those two semifinals? Gotta feel for England and Pakistan but they were two ripping games. So congratulations to New Zealand and Australia for making it to the final. I think I will go for Australia to lift their first-ever T20 trophy after a thrilling win over Pakistan in the semi-final. After the way they finished, I think they have got a lot of momentum.”

“Steve Smith’s role as Mr Fix is spot on” – Warne

The cricketer-turned-commentator also talked about the role of Steve Smith in playing XI, who hasn’t been able to lay much impact with the bat. While calling him “Mr Fix’, Shane Warne highlighted that that the right-hander’s presence brings flexibility to the team

“Now that the Aussies have their batting order right & finding form. They can win the WC. I wouldn’t have had Smith in my starting XI. But his role as Mr fix is spot on. Lose early wkts he goes in & if they don’t he slides down & the beasts (Marsh, Stoinis, Maxwell) go in,” he tweeted.
