Top 5 captaincy candidates available at IPL 2022 mega auction

With just a few months left for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, all teams have revealed their official list of player retentions. However, with a maximum of just four players allowed to be retained, most franchises need a lot of bases to cover at the mega auction.

Some sides have even released their previous skippers and will look to buy someone for this role at the auction table. CSK’s MS Dhoni, DC’s Rishabh Pant, MI’s Rohit Sharma, RR’s Sanju Samson, and SRH’s Kane Williamson are once again set to lead their previous franchises.

Now, let’s look at some of the options available for the captaincy role at the IPL 2022 mega auction:

David Warner

Ace Australia batter David Warner is a no brainer to be picked at the auction for the leadership role. The southpaw has performed exceptionally well for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the past few seasons and even led them to their only title win back in 2016.

Shreyas Iyer

Former Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Shreyas Iyer is all set to mark his presence at the mega auction after being released by his previous team. The right-handed batter played a vital role in the revival of DC in 2019. He is most likely to be the skipper of whichever team picks him ahead of IPL 2022.

Eoin Morgan

One of the most successful white-ball captains, Eoin Morgan will go to the auction as one of the probable leaders at the mega auction. The Englishman has led his country to clinch their maiden 50-over World Cup title in 2019. Morgan was also KKR’s skipper when they reached the final in IPL 2020.

KL Rahul

Former Punjab Kings (PBKS) and current vice-captain of India’s T20 side, KL Rahul will be a definite captaincy choice for his upcoming franchise in IPL 2022. However, he hasn’t been able to produce great results as a captain but has got the potential to be a star leader in the near future.

Faf du Plessis

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis is one of the most experienced captaincy candidates at the IPL 2022 auction. The 37-year-old has an extensive record of leading the Proteas across formats all over the globe. Moreover, he has played a lot of cricket under MS Dhoni in CSK which will be a definite add-on.
