Rajasthan Royals have begun play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022! The Lucknow Super Giants are the latest team to succumb to the inaugural-season champions. The competition was a rollercoaster ride that went right down to the wire. However, thanks to a sensational last over from debutant Kuldeep Sen, RR survived Marcus Stoinis’ scare to win by three runs.
Earlier in the game, the Lucknow Super Giants won the toss and chose to bowl at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. RR got off to a good start with a revamped batting order, with openers Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal adding 42 runs for the first wicket. However, the pair were fired in quick succession, and what happened next was a shocking collapse.
The Men in Pink were reduced to 67/4 after losing four wickets in 25 runs. Shimron Hetmyer and Ravichandran Ashwin combined for 68 runs for the fifth wicket, just as LSG appeared to be in complete control. Hetmyer was the more aggressive partner, scoring an unbeaten 59 off 36 deliveries. Ashwin also had a good game, scoring 28 runs off 23 balls before being taken out. As a result, in their allotted 20 overs, RR advanced to 165/6.
Trent Boult’s outstanding performance blew LSG away
In response, LSG got off to a disastrous start, with skipper KL Rahul and Krishnappa Gowtham both out in the first two legitimate balls of the innings by Trent Boult. Trent Boult caused massive damage, and the Super Giants were never able to recover. Jason Holder’s promotion to number four didn’t work out either, as he was defeated by Prasidh Krishna after scoring eight out of fourteen cherries.
Deepak Hooda joined opener Quinton de Kock on the field, and the duo showed some tenacity. However, Yuzvendra Chahal’s outstanding four-wicket haul in the middle overs ensured that LSG’s run of losing regular wickets continued. Hooda contributed 25 runs to De Kock’s 39 runs off 32 balls.
With the required run rate constantly increasing and RR taking regular wickets, LSG appeared completely depressed. Marcus Stoinis, who was playing in his first game of the season, had other ideas. He took matters into his own hands and reintroduced LSG into the hunt. However, Kuldeep Sen’s outstanding final over ensured that Stoinis’ 17-ball 38-run cameo was in vain, as RR won by three runs.
