‘It’s time for Rashid Khan’ – Twitter reacts as Mohammad Nabi steps down from captaincy

Mohammad Nabi
Mohammad Nabi announced his decision to step down as Afghanistan’s captain on Friday (November 4) citing his disappointment at the side’s poor performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup. He also mentioned that he was not on the same page with the management regarding team selection.
The announcement came following Afghanistan’s defeat against defending champions Australia in their last group stage match. With this loss, Nabi’s side ended up at the bottom of the table and remained the only team who failed to register even a single win in the event.
Nabi was named the captain of the side just before the 2021 T20 World Cup after Rashid Khan resigned from the post. The selectors didn’t consult Rashid while selecting players, which left him fuming. So he resigned within half an hour after the squad was announced.
Having captained the Afghanistan side already back in 2010, fans had a lot of expectations from the 37-year-old. However, during his second stint, the side managed to win only 10 games out of 23, including a poor performance in the latest showpiece event. Nabi took to Twitter to announce his decision.
“Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that not us nor our supporters were expecting,” Nabi wrote in a statement posted on his Twitter account. “We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches.
“From the last one year, our team preparation was not to a level that a captain would want it or needed for a big tournament. Moreover, in some of the last tours the team management, selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance.
“Therefore, with due respect, effectively immediately I announce to STEP DOWN as a CAPTAIN & will continue to play for my country when the management & team need me. I thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart who came to the grounds despite matches being affected by the rain and those who supporters us worldwide, your love truly means a lot to us. Long live Afghanistan.”
