Twitterati reacts as Rising Pune Supergiants Instagram handle turned into Lucknow IPL team account

Lucknow's new Instagram handle and owner Sanjiv Goenka

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 is set to be even grander in scale with the arrival of two new teams – Lucknow and Ahmedabad. This makes the upcoming season a 10-team affair, taking it to a total of 94 matches; 34 more than the regular 60 matches.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow-based franchise seems to have got its official Instagram handle after renaming the account of now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPSG). But they haven’t yet changed the username of the ID which means the name of the new team hasn’t been decided yet. Notably, Pune’s team was also owned by the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, who are the current owners of Lucknow.

The Supergiants appeared during the IPL 2016 and 2017 in the absence of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Apart from them, the team of Gujarat Lions (GL) was also for those two years.

RPSG had a horrible season in 2016 as they had won only five matches out of 14, and won only two of their seven home games under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. However, the 40-year-old was sacked from this role in the subsequent season and Australia’s Steve Smith led the side. In 2017, they reached the final of the tournament but fell short by the narrowest margin of one run against Mumbai Indians (MI).
