Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has announced that he will be stepping down as the Indian captain following the T20 World Cup. Kohli took to Twitter to share the news. The Indian captain will be stepping down as the country’s T20I captain but will continue to lead the side in ODIs and Test format.
Kohli added that he arrived at the decision only after giving it a good thought. The Indian captain reveals that he arrived at the decision after taking it up with the head coach Ravi Shastri and Rohit Sharma, his deputy in the white-ball formats. This is shocking news but one which was long coming.
Who will takeover after Virat Kohli?
While Virat Kohli didn’t name his successor in his note, Rohit Sharma seems the obvious choice now. His success in the IPL had the fans demanding his promotion to the captaincy role. barring the destructive opener, there seems to be no other player in the team who could fill the shoes of Kohli.
Kohli added that he decided to step down so as to give himself space to be able to lead the side to the best of his abilities in the other two formats. Off late, the Delhi batsman has not been in the best of his touches. His low returns could have been a reason behind his decision which has taken the nation by shock.
This decision also brings tremendous pressure for him to step up in his final outing in the shortest format as captain which will be at the T20 World Cup. With the condition in UAE being familiar to those in the subcontinent, this will be Virat Kohli’s best bet to add an ICC trophy to his cabinet ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
