There is nothing that Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner can’t do on the field. During the match between Australia and South Africa on Tuesday, March 22 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, Ash Gardner took an incredible one-handed catch that left the watchers and herself in awe.

It all happened in the last ball of the 45th over. South Africa had scored 228 runs after losing 4 wickets. Spinner Jess Jonassen was delivering to Mignon du Preez. Du Preez tried to send the ball towards the mid-wicket boundary to clear the rope. But then, Ash Gardner, who was standing a few steps ahead of her original position, backtracked. She kept her eyes on the ball, then jumped and grabbed it out of thin air with her right hand. Du Preez got dismissed for 14 off 13 balls.

The catch of Ash Gardner was just as good as ‘Ben Stokes’ says Nasser Hussain

Commentator Nasser Hussain recalled Ben Stokes’ superhuman catch at the World Cup against South Africa and compared the catch of Ash Gardner to his catch. He said, “Brilliant from Ash Gardner, what a cricketer she is…came in a couple of yards and then she was backtracking, she had to go one-handed. She’s amazed herself. I was lucky enough to see that Ben Stokes catch at The Oval…that is just as good from Ash Gardner.”

The two sides, South Africa and Australia, were playing for the first time with each other since the last World Cup in 2017. Both were the unbeaten sides in this year’s tournament. This battle now ended the winning streaks of the Proteas.

Australia won the toss and decided to bowl first. From South Africa’s side, L. Wolvaardt scored the most, 90 off 134 deliveries. And S. Luus had scored a quick half-century, 52 off 51 balls with 6 fours. The score, at the end of their innings, read 271. Australia’s best response came from M Lanning who scored a hasty century with 135 runs off just 130 deliveries and hitting 15 superb fours. Australia won the game easily in 45.2 overs by losing five wickets.
