Mitchell Hay (L) and Blake Coburn (R) take a brilliant catch in Super Smash 2021-22
The 2021-22 edition of New Zealand’s domestic tournament, Super Smash, is currently taking place at various grounds of the country. Meanwhile, Blake Coburn and Mitchell Hay combined to claim a sensational catch near the boundary rope during the 18th match of the tournament.
This incident took place during the Central Districts vs Canterbury clash at the Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. Central Districts’ batter Ben Smith went for a big shot over the deep square leg against right-arm leg-spin bowler Todd Astle on the fourth delivery of the eighth over of the innings. However, Coburn produced an outstanding dive to prevent the ball from clearing the boundary rope and pulled it back while Hay completed a regulation catch to hand over an unfortunate dismissal to the batter.

Canterbury beat Central Districts by five wickets in a high-scoring encounter

Earlier, Central Districts had won the toss and opted to bat to first on Friday. Their opening batters made the most out of the batting-friendly conditions to post a decent partnership of 48 runs for the first wicket. Adding to this, wicket-keeper Dane Cleaver and skipper Tom Bruce played super quick-fire knocks of 61 and 93* runs respectively to help the Districts post a huge total of 217/4 at the end of their 20 overs.
In reply, most of the Canterbury batters went bonkers after the opposition’s bowling as they played with exceptional strike rates. Leo Carter (56) and Cam Fletcher (48*) emerged as the top-scorers for the chasing side while Henry Shipley provided the finishing touch with the help of his five monstrous sixes off 11 deliveries.
